“What are the Blues?

The joyful participation in the sorrows of the world.”

— Joseph Campbell
If you had the blues in the early 1900‘s, one sure way to escape was to ”ride the blind“ — to hop a freight train not knowing where it was bound. That‘s what I feel about this project. I‘ve recorded this music not knowing where it will take me. But it doesn‘t matter, because the reward has been fulfilled in ridin‘ the music. It has opened philosophical windows to the past and revealed the roots of the music I grew up learning to play in New Orleans. So, let‘s say it has helped me to realize that sometimes we have to look backwards before we can move forward. Much of this music was performed and recorded by blind men in the early 1900‘s. I invite you to ride the blind man‘s blues music as a hobo. Stop, look and listen to the wisdom of the blues set in rhyme as the train rolls along tracks. They speak volumes about the facts of life, passed along from generation to generation. The traditional folk ballads and blues on ”Ride the Blind“ reflect the Southern culture of America from the 1860‘s – mid 1900‘s. College degrees and Ph.D.‘s are not required to understand what the music and the lyrics are about. It‘s raw, basic, bold and provocative. Although the music grew distinctly out of the Southern Afro-American culture, it has crossed over to people of all races and religious denominations, to the rich, poor, young and old alike. Who hasn‘t sung the blues at least once in their lifetime? — Trip Hunt
